Computer Information Systems 1410 — Information Technology Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software

This course covers the fundamentals of computer hardware and software as well as advanced concepts. Students who complete this course will be able to describe the internal components of a computer, assemble a computer system, install an operating system, and troubleshoot using system tools and diagnostic software. Students will also be able to connect to the Internet and share resources in a network environment. Hands-on lab activities will be an essential element of this course. Virtual learning tools are integrated to supplement classroom learning activities and provide interactive “hands-on” experience.

Student Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Define information technology (IT) and describe the components of a personal computer.
  2. Protect the student against accidents and injury, protect equipment from damage, protect data from loss, and protect the environment from contamination.
  3. Perform a step-by-step assembly of a desktop computer tower.
  4. Explain the purpose of preventive maintenance and identify the elements of the troubleshooting process.
  5. Explain, install and navigate an operating system
  6. Upgrade components (security and otherwise) based on customer needs
  7. Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting
  8. Describe, remove and replace select components of a laptop computer.
  9. Describe, remove and replace select components of a printer and scanner.
  10. Describe and install a network.
  11. Perform advanced installation of a desktop computer tower.
  12. Apply good communication skills and professional behavior while working with customers.
